What’s a Scholarship Worth?
Attention Student-Athletes:
We have student-athletes and their parent(s) ask us just how much an athletic scholarship is worth. Athletic scholarships can be worth a couple of thousand dollars to several thousand dollars a year. There are many factors involved such as the size of the school, the sport, private vs. public college, etc.
The question is how can a student-athlete get their portion of an athletic scholarship?
The solution is to understand what scholarships are available and then having a plan on how to get it.
A student-athlete can count on the cost of attending a public college for four to five years to cost in the range of $40,000 - $70,000. Some are less and some are more. It can cost $200,000 - $300,000 to attend a private school for four to five years. So, earning a scholarship is a huge plus in reducing the cost of a college education.
The military academies, Ivy League, and other private institutions will have the highest price tags to attend their colleges. Small public schools will be less expensive with larger public schools carrying a larger expense.
Most sports award partial athletic scholarships. But, when student-athletes add other scholarship money, they can greatly reduce their personal monetary expense to attend college.
For many families in today’s economy, obtaining scholarship aid is the only way their son or daughter can attend college. The student-athlete has to be willing to play their perspective sport in exchange for a scholarship. That’s not a bad tradeoff for the student-athlete who would really love to continue playing their sport in college.
There aren’t any guarantees in earning an athletic scholarship because a student-athlete has to have the right abilities and be a good fit for the college program. Be assured that if a student-athlete has the right approach with a workable plan, they can get the attention of college recruiters. A student-athlete can’t earn a scholarship unless college recruiters know that they exist.
Having a plan to get the attention of college recruiters in order to have the possibility of earning a scholarship has worked for many student-athletes just like you. It’s a matter of having the knowledge of what to do and when to do it.
